Hi, my name is Brianna Brandon. I'm an SBA sales officer with Santander Bank. I help customers and colleagues navigate the paycheck protection program and more recently help them understand the rules to maximize forgiveness. My question is, I have a PPP loan, and I'm wondering what's next. Step one is to ensure your PPP funds are spent appropriately. Generally, eligible expenses fit into two categories, barrel and nonpayroll. At least 60% of your PPP loan must be is for payroll and no more than 40% can be used for non payroll. The payroll category includes cash compensation, state and local taxes, and employers contributions to employees health care and retirement. nonparallel expenses include various forms of overhead like rent or mortgage interest, electricity, gas, water, transportation, telephone, or internet access. And remember, these non payroll expenses are only eligible if the services or agreements were in place before February 15 2020. funds must be spent and documented during a specific period of time known as the covered period. This is the eight or 24 week period after receiving your PPP loan. If your business pays employees bi weekly or more frequently, you can elect to track payroll using the alternative payroll covered period, which starts on the first day of your first pay cycle after receiving funds. For instance, if you received a PPP loan on a Thursday, but your payroll cycle begins the following Monday, you may start tracking payroll the Monday after receiving your loan and stop eight or 24 weeks later. You don't have to wait until the end of your covered period to apply for forgiveness. Just make sure funds are fully spent and documented appropriately to maximize forgiveness. Documenting PPP spending is critical to ensuring your eligibility for forgiveness. Make sure that all supporting documentation is dated and aligns with your covered period or the applicable reference period and federal documentation must account for cash compensation and payroll taxes during the covered period. nonpareil documentation must demonstrate that the service was in place before February 15th 2020 and that expenses were paid or incurred during the covered period.
